Back in January, Larry posted in our local Facebook groups asking for recommendations for someone to replace our front door. He met with a guy and gave him a down payment, which is standard here. That “gentleman” stayed in touch for a few weeks with excuses about power outages and delays, and even sent photos of the door in progress.
Then communication slowed. At one point, his wife messaged saying he had a head injury and was hospitalized. After that, it was more of the same until eventually he disappeared completely and blocked us, along with our money. We got scammed. I hope karma finds him.
Meanwhile, our front door was awful. It was warped, hard to open, and not secure. Larry and I regrouped and found that Home Depot had security doors. They were larger than our oddly sized opening, which is why we originally wanted a custom door. Since Home Depot referred us to a contractor for installation, we decided to go that route.
We were told the door would be delivered Wednesday between 2 and 4. No show, no communication. At this point, we’ve learned not to stress about it too much because it happens here. The door finally arrived late Thursday morning, and at least we had something to show for all the money we had spent. 🚪
On Friday, the contractor showed up with helpers to install it. They already knew before arriving that the door was two inches taller than our opening and about an inch too narrow, but their plan was to cut from the bottom. They told Larry that was the solution. When he told me, my first thought was how the door would even open. Once Larry asked them, they said “Ahhhh, she’s right!” and switched to cutting the top like we thought they would all along. 😳 See the text in the attached photos!
They were here from 10 am to 6:30 pm Friday and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday. We slept with cardboard over our front door for one night. Larry had to do some sanding, cementing, and painting to fix up the walls by our door. I had to clean cement dust for days, but we finally have a SECURE (it has 15 deadbolts!) front door! 🚪 It only took three months and far too much money.
